Humans were initially food gathers.   This is evident from the anatomy of Humans.  We lack the speed to be hunters nor do we have claws/canines to be scavengers. The shape of the hands is  such that these can be used only to gather/pluck fruits or at the most use stones to crack and eat nuts.

The domestication of fire lead to humans in diversifying the menu on their dining table.  Foods like grains/pulses/meats can not be digested raw and needs to be cooked.   It was only after domestication of fire that humans turned became hunters from food gathers.
